Forty years ago he tattooed a wizard on a mate's foot with a homemade machine. Since then he has rebuilt tattooing's oldest tools so the hand-tap tradition could survive the autoclave, and carried the sound of two sticks to at least ten countries a year. There is no stencil: every piece is drawn straight onto the body, with his wife holding the skin firm so the ink goes in clean. Four decades in, Brent McCown is ranked among the 100 best tattoo artists on earth, and he still works like the kid who could draw.
